Advanced Techniques. Once the building blocks of a chart are understood, the next step is learning to read the chart as a whole. The techniques gathered here are ways of standing back to see the larger patterns, the balance of energies, and the points that pull a chart together. They are less about any single placement and more about synthesis, the art of weaving many details into one coherent picture. Some of these techniques look at distribution, such as the hemispheres and quadrants, the overall chart shape, and the balance of elements and modalities. Others find points of special weight, such as a stellium, a singleton, the chart ruler, or a dominant planet. A few work at the level of single degrees, including the decans, the critical degrees, and the anaretic degree, which mark placements of unusual emphasis. Still others refine how a planet is judged, such as its accidental dignity, whether it is unaspected, and the old distinction between benefic and malefic. The final step, chart synthesis, brings everything together. These techniques assume a working knowledge of the fundamentals and the core building blocks, and they are where astrology shifts from naming parts to reading a whole life.
