Ascendant

The Ascendant, also called the rising sign, is the point on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of birth. It marks the cusp of the first house and belongs to the horizon axis, sitting opposite the Descendant. The Ascendant describes how a person meets the world: their outward manner, physical body, and the first impression they make before anyone knows them well. The rising sign works like a lens the rest of the chart is seen through. Its sign shapes appearance, body language, and the instinctive way a person comes across and starts things. Two people born on the same day can seem quite different because their rising signs differ. The Ascendant is sometimes called the mask, though it is less a disguise than a doorway into the fuller self. Because the angles move about one degree every four minutes, the Ascendant shifts signs roughly every two hours, so an exact birth time matters. Planets near it are strongly emphasized and color first impressions further. The work is to let the mask open onto the person behind it rather than harden into a fixed front.
