Aspect Shapes. An aspect shape, also called an aspect pattern or configuration, is a group of three or more planets linked by aspects into a recognizable geometric figure. Rather than reading each aspect on its own, astrologers read the whole shape as a single unit, because the planets work together as a team and create a theme larger than any one connection between them. Aspect shapes tend to fall into a few families. Some are harmonious, built mainly from trines and sextiles, such as the Grand Trine, the Kite, and the Grand Sextile, and they describe flowing talent. Others are tense, built from squares and oppositions, such as the T-Square and the Grand Cross, and they describe drive born of friction. A third group blends the two, such as the Wedge, the Cradle, and the Mystic Rectangle, mixing challenge with relief. A further group focuses energy onto a single planet, the apex, which becomes a pressure point and a calling. The Yod, the Boomerang Yod, and Thor's Hammer all work this way.
