Chart Emphasis. Beyond any single placement, a chart has an overall emphasis, a leaning toward certain elements, modalities, or planets that colors the whole personality. Reading this balance is one of the first things an astrologer does, since it gives a feel for a person before the details are examined. Chart emphasis is found by counting and weighing where the planets fall. The balance of elements shows the basic temperament. A chart full of fire and air feels active and outgoing, while one heavy in earth and water feels grounded and inward. A missing element is just as telling, often describing a quality a person struggles to reach or overcompensates for. The balance of modalities works the same way, showing whether a person tends to initiate, sustain, or adapt. A chart can also be dominated by a single planet, one that stands out by being angular, heavily aspected, or ruling key points. This dominant planet sets a tone that runs through the whole chart. Weighing element, modality, and planetary emphasis together gives a quick, telling sketch of a person, the broad strokes that the rest of the reading then fills in with detail.
