Detriment

Detriment is a debility, the opposite of domicile. A planet is in detriment when it occupies the sign directly opposite the one it rules, where it is least at home and has to work against the grain. Because Mars rules Aries, it is in detriment in Libra, and because the Moon rules Cancer, it is in detriment in Capricorn. In its sign of detriment, a planet finds the environment unsuited to its nature. The qualities it wants to express are at odds with the style of the sign, so it operates with less ease and may show its more awkward or strained side. This does not doom the placement, but it does mean the planet has to make a conscious effort to function well. A planet in detriment often pushes a person to develop the very strengths that do not come naturally, which can become a source of growth over time. The work of detriment is to recognize where a planet feels out of place and to build skill there deliberately, rather than assuming the difficulty is permanent.
