Detriment

Detriment is a debility, the mirror of domicile. A planet is in detriment when it occupies the sign directly opposite the one it rules, where it is least at home and has to work against its own nature. Because Mars rules Aries, it is in detriment in Libra, and because the Moon rules Cancer, it is in detriment in Capricorn. In its sign of detriment, a planet finds the surroundings unsuited to how it wants to operate. Its qualities sit at odds with the style of the sign, so it functions on borrowed terms, with less ease, and can show its more awkward or strained side. This does not doom the placement, but it does ask for conscious effort. A planet in detriment often pushes a person to build the very strengths that do not come naturally, which can become a source of growth over time. The work of detriment is to notice where a planet feels out of place and to develop skill there deliberately, rather than treating the difficulty as permanent.
