The Lot of Necessity is one of the seven Hermetic lots and is associated with Mercury. It is not a body but a calculated point, traditionally drawn from the Ascendant together with the position of Mercury and the Lot of Fortune. As its name suggests, it represents constraint and compulsion, the pressures, obligations, and fated circumstances a person cannot easily escape, where life narrows and asks something of them whether they will it or not.
By sign, the Lot of Necessity describes the style of the constraints a person meets and how they tend to handle what binds them. By house, it shows the area of life where they feel the pull of obligation most strongly, where freedom is limited and duty, dependency, or hard necessity shapes their choices. It often marks where a person must accept what cannot be changed.
In traditional astrology Necessity is read alongside Fortune, since it is built from that lot, and it carries the weight of what is required rather than what is desired. Its calculation is reversed between day and night charts. The work of the Lot of Necessity is to recognize where genuine constraint operates, to meet obligation without resentment, and to find freedom inside the limits that cannot be removed.
