Opposition

The opposition is the aspect formed when two planets sit one hundred and eighty degrees apart, facing each other across the chart. The two signs share a modality and a charge but belong to opposite elements, so the planets match in tempo yet reach for different things. Tradition counts it as hard, though its tension is less a clash than a seesaw: two ends of one axis, each incomplete without the other. What an opposition feels like is a pull between extremes. The Sun opposite the Moon sets conscious aims against instinctive needs; Venus opposite Mars sets the wish to be close against the urge to pursue. Often one end is lived out while the other is projected onto partners, rivals, or situations that arrive as if from outside. A person swings between the poles, or leans on one and keeps meeting the other in the people around them. An opposition often marks a defining tension in a chart, one a person feels for years. The trouble is that one pole gets lived while the other is disowned and met repeatedly in other people. The work is not to choose a side but to hold both and find the balance point between them.
