Profections are a traditional timing technique that advances the chart by one house for each year of life. At birth a person begins in the first house, at age one they move to the second, at age two to the third, and so on, returning to the first house every twelve years. The house reached in a given year shows where the main themes of that year will be found.
The sign on that house, and the planet that rules it, become especially important for the year. This ruler is called the lord of the year, and its natal placement, its condition, and the transits it receives describe much of what the year holds. A year that activates the seventh house, for example, often brings relationships to the foreground, with the ruler of that house guiding how.
Profections are simple to calculate yet remarkably useful, and they pair naturally with transits and returns to focus a forecast. By pointing to one house and one ruling planet each year, they cut through the noise of many simultaneous influences. Profections answer the question of which part of the chart is lit up in any given year of life.
