Secondary Progressions

Secondary Progressions are a symbolic forecasting technique based on a simple formula: each day after birth corresponds to one year of life. To see the progressed chart for a person's thirtieth year, an astrologer looks at the sky as it was thirty days after their birth. This slow, symbolic movement describes inner growth rather than outer events. Progressions show how a person matures and changes from the inside over the course of a life. The progressed Sun shifts about one degree a year, changing sign roughly every thirty years and marking major shifts in identity. The progressed Moon moves faster, completing its cycle in about twenty-seven to twenty-eight years and tracing a person's changing emotional seasons. Because they unfold gradually, progressions are read as quiet internal developments, often felt as a slow ripening rather than a sudden change. They work alongside transits, which describe outer events, to give a fuller picture of a period. Secondary progressions answer the question of how a person is evolving within, year by year, beneath the surface of daily life.
