Singleton

Singleton. A singleton is a planet that stands alone in some significant way, set apart from the others so that it carries unusual weight. The term is used in a few related senses, but in each one the lone planet stands out and draws attention, often acting as a focal point for the whole chart. The most common singleton is a planet alone in one half of the chart, with every other planet in the opposite hemisphere. This lone planet becomes a kind of release valve for all the rest, much like the handle of a bucket-shaped chart, and a person tends to express a great deal through it. A singleton can also be the only planet of its element, modality, or polarity, such as the sole water planet in an otherwise dry chart. That single planet then carries the entire weight of a quality the person otherwise lacks. Because it has no company to share its role, a singleton is emphasized out of proportion to its size. It often describes a defining trait or a recurring theme a person cannot ignore. Spotting a singleton is a quick way to find a planet that punches well above its weight.
