The square is the aspect formed when two planets sit ninety degrees apart. It is a hard aspect, creating tension between planets that are in signs of the same modality but different elements, so they pull in directions that do not easily agree. A square brings friction, frustration, and inner conflict, the feeling of two parts of the self working against each other. That tension is uncomfortable, but it is also productive. Squares generate the drive to act, because the discomfort demands a response. Much of a person's energy, ambition, and growth comes from working through the challenges a square presents. The planets keep pushing against one another until a person finds a way to use both rather than letting one win. A poorly handled square can show up as repeating struggles, stress, and the sense of always hitting the same wall. Met consciously, it becomes a source of strength and accomplishment. The work of a square is to stop fighting one side of the tension and instead build something that honors both planets at once.
