Types of Chart
Astrology uses a few different chart setups, and they answer different questions.
Astrology uses a few different chart setups, and they answer different questions. A natal chart is the birth snapshot, the sky drawn for the exact moment and place a person was born. It stays fixed for life and describes who a person is: their character, strengths, and potential. Every other technique measures back against it.
A transit chart compares the current positions of the planets to the natal chart. The real planets keep moving, and as they form aspects to natal placements they activate different parts of the chart. This is the tool for timing, for asking what is happening now or on some chosen date. Slow planets like Saturn mark long chapters, while the Moon brings passing daily influences.
A synastry comparison overlays two people's natal charts to read the connection between them. It looks at how one person's planets aspect the other's, and where they fall in the other's houses, which describes attraction, support, and friction in a relationship of any kind.
In short: natal for who a person is, transits for timing, synastry for how two people meet.
