The Vertex is a calculated point on the western side of the chart, sometimes called a secondary descendant. It is formed where the ecliptic meets another great circle of the sky in the west, and in astrology it is linked to fate, destined encounters, and turning points that seem to arrive from outside a person's own choosing. By sign, the Vertex describes the quality of these fated experiences. By house, it shows the area of life where a person tends to meet destiny, often through other people and events that feel meant to be. Many astrologers connect the Vertex with significant relationships and pivotal moments that change the course of a life. The Vertex usually becomes active when another planet or point contacts it, whether in the natal chart, in transits, or in comparison with another person's chart. At such times a person may feel swept up in something larger than themselves. Its work is less about effort and more about recognition, noticing the meaningful encounters and crossroads when they come and being willing to walk through the door they open.
